Until the spring of 2019, landscapes were just one thing among others. I became more serious about them after signing up for a workshop on making landscapes on black and white film, and spent the weeks leading up to the date exploring those practices and generating as many questions as I could. And then - the session was canceled. Still, something stuck.

I do spend a lot of time outdoors, and I am often awed when confronted with a strong sense of place, or presence. Many say “shoot what you love,” and much of that is found in wet places and otherwise outside. I wonder sometimes about finding more sophisticated, urban or monumental subjects, but then am reminded of reading about a friend of Diane Arbus. He lived in rural Wisconsin, and since there were no big city scenes, he worked with the landscapes that made up his world.

This collection is intended to show where I’ve been drawn to put my energy, as opposed to just “greatest hits.” The photos are generally in reverse order extending back about 3 years.
