Flatlands

Eastern North Carolina is carpeted with flat fields and farms that stretch until confined by dense woods and wetlands. Some experience these environs as monotonous, varying only between being empty or overgrown. I see a landscape at home with itself, little changed from one era to the next, highlighted here and there by utilitarian buildings and small towns. The forms, the light and the color, man-made or not, enliven and give meaning to each other. They remind me patiently that they are here for the long term, while I am only passing through.
